The UNSC usually assigns Three-Letter Codes to each class of Covenant Ship. These stand for the Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary roles of each ship. These result in names like CAS, CSO, or SDV as primaries. However, if a ship is usually for specific purposes, they may have two repeating letters (for example, the CCS-Class Battlecruiser).
| Letter | Stands for | Meaning | Ships |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Assault | Is capable of leading large-scale planetary atacks. | CAS, CAR, DAV. |
| C | Combatant | Is commonly used for Ship-To-Ship combat purposes. | CCS, CAS, CSO, CRS, CPV. |
| D | Denoted | Always, or most frequently, plays a fixed role in Fleets. | DDS, SDV, DAV, DSC. |
| O | Ordained | Fitted with Forerunner Augmentation. | CSO, ORS. |
| P | Piloted | Usually situated with Advanced A.I | CPV. |
| R | Reverence | Denotes that these ships can conduct advanced Recon Operations. | ORS, CRS, CAR. |
| S | Salvation | Means the ship has a Energy Projector and is capable of Glassing a Planet. | DDS, CAS, CSO, ORS, CCS, CRS, SDV, DSC. |
| V | Voyager | Means the ship is mainly purposed for Long-Distance travel or attack. | CPV, SDV, DAV, |
While some ships are able to conduct many different types of operations, they may not necessarily have those classifications in their name. For example, the CAS-Class Assault Carrier is able to fulfill many roles. Specifically, Ship-To-Ship Combat, Glassing, and being able to lead armies. However, it is also capable of long distance travel, making it possible to have a "V" in It's name. Despite this, it is not the ship's primary role, and as such is not in the name.
